Pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2 all took part in an exciting Maths competition today, organised, and beautifully promoted, by our very own Maths Whizz Mr Goddard! Competitors wore their house colours and answered questions related to multiplication. Many rounds were ‘quick fire’ so pupils had to work hard and apply all the skills and knowledge quickly as part of a team which included pupils from Year 1 to Year 6.
There’s no doubt that this was an exciting event, raising the profile of Maths still further in school, allowing pupils from different year groups and Key Stages to work collaboratively while also helping to support all our pupils to learn their times tables. A big thank you to Mr Goddard on behalf of our competitors for organising such a fantastic event for pupils and to Portheras House who were today’s champions.
Pupils loved being a part of this event, Purple Class pupils said that it was ‘challenging, fun, exciting, tense and amazing’ also that ‘If Maths doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you’.
Pupils from Green Class were quoted as saying this event was ‘Mathelicious! We loved countdown Maths – amazing!’
Yellow Class said ‘we loved the learning’ and pupils from Blue Class said that this was the ‘Best Maths tournament ever’.
Mr Goddard, who leads Maths in school, spoke about the excitement of a competition like this; ‘Long lasting success in Maths is so closely linked to confidence but also enjoyment, our aim is to provide pupils with a challenging and exciting curriculum where opportunities to work collaboratively, and in real life context, helps embed new skills and deepens understanding. I was delighted by news of pupils working even harder to learn their tables at home in the preceding weeks leading up to this competition in order to improve their chances of success. I can’t wait for the next event!’
