We are Gulval School, a mixed infant and junior village school based in Gulval on the outskirts of Penzance. We are part of ALAT, a multi-academy trust set up to raise the standards of education in Cornwall.
We currently have 150 pupils on roll with us and our children learn in a happy and harmonious atmosphere conducive to learning and an environment where they can develop as individuals with an awareness of others in our society. Pupils numbers have increased by 41% in just 2 years and first choice application for Reception have increased by 96%. There is no doubt that Gulval School is a first choice school for the community.
The new Principal was appointed following conversion to academy status on 1st June 2014 to further support the vision to become an outstanding school and enable pupils to realise their full potential. We pride ourselves on being a friendly school, where relationships between our staff and the children are very positive and based on mutual respect. We have high expectations of both effort and behaviour and we work hard with all children to help them succeed.
We welcome children from Long Rock, Penzance, Chyandour, Trevaylor, Marazion, Ludgvan, Trezelah and Badger’s Cross and there are five classes in the school.
Our school building
The original school building dates back to before 1840 and is still in use.
In 1978 an additional block was added to modernise the school and in 1992 and again in 1993, the building was improved to be made more accessible with increased wheelchair access and facilities. In 1999 another extension provided an additional classroom and the school field was extended and leveled with a new hard court play area added.
In 2001 another classroom and new staff room were developed to accommodate increasing pupil numbers and then finally in 2004, two additional infant classrooms were built.
The school has invested in ICT over recent years and each classroom has its own new multimedia computer and interactive television – we also have a bank of iPads. A full WiFi upgrade was achieved in January 2017.
