Pioneers of Penzance

This term, our Year 1 learners have been busy distinguishing between rural and urban areas and identifying that we live in an urban settlement. We took our classroom outdoors to investigate and record the features of our own school grounds—from the playground and polytunnel to the tangle frame. Back in class, the children practised reading and interpreting the symbols on a map of Penzance, pinpointing roads, parks, and public buildings, and finally collaborated to design their very own detailed map of our town, complete with a clear key and all the features they discovered. After half term, we plan to venture further afield into the grounds of Gulval, where we can key landmarks such as the church, village hall, and local restaurant.
