Our intent at Gulval School in Maths is

We want to inspire confidence in every child so that they become resilient and independent learners. Most importantly they will develop a love of maths that is evident in the ‘buzz’ for learning that exists for each child. They will understand problems, become ‘deep thinkers’ and be able to reason about the world around them.

We want to provide a maths curriculum that is engaging and creative; where children can represent their thinking in a variety of ways and enjoy the challenge of investigating numbers.

We want children to work together to solve problems, talk about their thinking and develop resilience in their learning. We want children to appreciate the strength of teamwork and understand the value of their own contributions when investigating.

We want children to know the purpose of their learning, relate it to real situations and use it in their everyday lives. They will see the relevance of maths to their lives, build connections and appreciate the contribution of mathematics to all aspects of society past, present and future.

We want children to be able to manipulate numbers confidently, accurately, efficiently and flexibly. They will then be able to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills successfully in lessons and beyond.

At Gulval School, we believe that mathematics is essential for helping children understand and navigate the world around them. Guided by the principles of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), we follow a teaching for mastery approach that ensures every child at Gulval can succeed. Our maths teaching is structured around the Five Big Ideas of Mastery: representation and structure, variation, mathematical thinking, fluency and coherence. These core principles underpin every lesson at Gulval, enabling pupils to build secure understanding over time, draw on prior knowledge and make meaningful connections across concepts.

Our curriculum is designed to provide a coherent and carefully sequenced journey through key content. Procedural fluency and conceptual understanding are developed in tandem, allowing pupils to become both accurate and flexible in their thinking. By exploring ideas deeply and learning through small, inter-connected steps, children build confidence and resilience over time.

 Throughout each lesson, carefully chosen examples and models are used to highlight key patterns and ideas; teachers model the use of precise mathematical language and pupils are encouraged to use this language to explain their thinking clearly and confidently. We follow a concrete–pictorial–abstract (CPA) approach in every classroom, where children begin with hands-on resources to explore new concepts, moving on to pictorial representations such as tens frames, diagrams or bar models before progressing to more formal abstract methods. This layered approach supports a solid understanding of underlying mathematical structures.

Opportunities for reasoning and problem-solving are embedded throughout all areas of maths learning at Gulval, where children are supported to follow lines of enquiry, test ideas, spot patterns and make conjectures. They learn to justify their thinking using evidence and mathematical vocabulary and apply these skills to both routine and non-routine problems. Pupils are taught to work systematically, think flexibly and persevere even when faced with multi-step challenges. This emphasis on depth rather than speed helps develop fluent, reflective and enthusiastic mathematicians who are well equipped for the next stage of their learning.

99 Club

At Gulval School, we believe that number fluency and automatic recall is essential to being a successful mathematician, enabling children to complete more complex calculations and problems over time. As a result of this, we are launching the ’99 club’, a challenge based programme that encourages children to be secure in their number facts. Every week, each child will complete a challenge to try and gain entry into a specific number club.

 This will work alongside the KIRFs already used both within school and at home to support your child with automaticity and instant recall of number facts. We look forward to seeing how they do. Bring it on!

All children will start at the 11 club (number bonds) and progress up through the stages of the programme when they can successfully complete all questions correctly (22 to 33 to 44 etc). The time limit will always be set at five minutes, but with additional questions added each time alongside more challenging mathematical concepts such as times tables, inverse operations and fractions, decimals and percentages.

Following on from successful completion of a club, a child will be awarded a certificate and membership card, and gain automatic entry into the next consecutive challenge. For those who can achieve the 99 club status, there is also the added challenge of the 99+ club!

We’re excited to introduce two brand-new levels of the 99 Club: the Gold Club and the Platinum Club.

These exclusive clubs have been created to stretch our very strongest mathematicians even further, demanding exceptional fluency, lightning-fast recall and outstanding mathematical knowledge. They’re designed for pupils who love a challenge and are determined to reach the very highest standard.

To prepare for these new levels, children should continue practising the 99+ Club entry forms, which provide the perfect stepping stone towards unlocking Gold and Platinum status.
